Lawsonia intracellularis
- Affects a variety of species
- Obligate intracellular organism
- Causes a characteristic proliferative lesion in the cryptal epithelium of the small intestine and/or large bowel
Clinical Signs:
Diarrhea, ill-thrift
Pathogenesis:
Diarrhea likely due to loss of functional mucosal surface area, ill-thrift and wasting likely due to protein-losing enteropathy
Gross Lesions:
Cerebriform or gyrate pattern on the serosal aspect of the intestine
