Thorax (pleural space) and lungs
Shown:
Pleural effusion, serous, acute with wet/edematous and congested lungs due to acute congestive heart failure (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy).
Comments:
Note: The adjacent liver is quite dark red-mahogany and congested.
Pathology:
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Diastolic disorder, rather than systolic
- Most common cardiomyopathy in cats
- Cause is unknown, may be an inherited trait in Maine Coon and American Shorthair cats
Gross Lesions:
Enlarged heart with symmetric concentric hypertrophy of the ventricles, especially the left ventricle
