General Information:
Avian Influenza is a highly contagious disease that occurs in wild birds and mammals. A new strain of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza virus was recently introduced into North America and has spread across the continent. It causes fatal infection by damaging internal organs and the brain. Infected animals have abnormal behaviours like swimming in circles and unusual neck positions, but it can result in large numbers of dead birds. It can spread to domestic poultry like chickens and turkeys, as well as occasionally to domestic dogs and cats. Avian Influenza is a zoonotic virus, meaning it can be transmitted between animals and people.
