Myocardial necrosis in monensin (ionophore) toxicity
Etiology:
Ionophore toxicity
- Ionophores alter membrane permeability causing skeletal and cardiac muscle damage
- Horses are extremely susceptible
Clinical Signs:
Colic in horses, muscle tremors, sweating, recumbency and stiffness
Gross Lesions:
- Primarily shows myocardial damage in horses, skeletal muscle damage in sheep and swine, and equally affected skeletal and cardiac muscle damage in cattle
- Muscle may show pale streaks, especially in the hindlimb muscles
- Cases with cardiac damage will show signs of congestive heart failure such as pulmonary congestion and edema, hepatic congestion and fluid accumulations
