Etiology:
Johne's Disease
Causative Agent:
Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP)
Species Affected:
Any domestic ruminant
Clinical Signs:
- Affects cattle 2 years of age or older, profuse diarrhea with progressive emaciation.
- In sheep, goats, and other ruminants, diarrhea may not be seen.
- Infected animals can appear healthy for months to years.
Pathology:
Ingestion and uptake in the Peyer's patches of the lower small intestine --> infection of macrophages and lymph nodes.
